Photogrammetry Discipline

Photogrammetry, a term composed of the greek words for "light", "drawing", and "measuring", is the discipline of mapping from aerial photography or satellite images.

As Paul R. Wolf writes: "Photogrammetry may be defined as the art, science, and technology of obtaining reliable information about physical objects and the environment through processes of recording, measuring, and interpreting photographic images and patterns of recorded radiant electromagnetic energy." [Paul R. Wolf, Ph.D., Elements of Photogrammetry, McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1974]

Photogrammetry provides the mathematical infrastructure for the geometric correction of images and
the construction of large maps from many images.

This mathematical infrastructure becomes more and more developed as digital processes are being used by mappers. These processes may include the collection of digital images, the mapping using soft-copy tools, and the real-time processing of mapping detail.

The "orthorectification" of images is a pure photogrammetric application. This involves the removal of "relief displacement" from images, so that image displacements due to problems in perspective are corrected.

GeoCounsel is capable of building meaningful specifications, and perform the corresponding
supervisory functions, for photogrammetric projects.
